Enhanced aging kinetics in Al-Mg-Si alloys by up-quenching

چکیده
Abstract Precipitation-hardened aluminium alloys typically obtain their strength by forming second-phase particles, which, however, often have a negative effect on formability. To enable both lightweight construction and of complex parts such as body panels, high formability are required simultaneously. Cluster hardening is promising approach to achieve this. Here, we show that short thermal spikes, denoted up-quenching, increase aging kinetics, which attribute the repeated process vacancies being formed at temperatures retained when cooled lower temperatures. Combined with further heat treatment, up-quenching promotes rapid extensive cluster formation in Al-Mg-Si alloys, turn generates significant strengthening industrially relevant treatment time scales. The elongation values also observed attributed reduced solute depleted zones along grain boundaries.

Influence of Natural Aging Time on Two-Step Aging Behavior of Al-Mg-Si(-Cu) Alloys
Nanoclusters formed during natural aging cause the negative effect of the two-step aging in the age-hardenable Al-Mg-Si alloys. The relationship between the clustering behavior during natural aging and the two-step aging behavior was studied using the hardness, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electrical resistivity measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation in the...

The dependence of the mechanism of age hardening in Al-Mg-Si alloys on their Si content, the pre-aging conditions and addition of Cu has been investigated. For this purpose, the solute clusters and the metastable precipitates in aged Al-Mg-Si alloys have been characterized by a three dimensional atom probe (3DAP) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Atom probe analysis results have revea...
